History: The royal Navy made extensive use of trawlers in both wars for minesweeping and escort, anti submarine service. Over 500 trawlers were used by the RN in world war 2.

These vessels were also used by all of the navy's in the North Sea area and were very weatherly, remaining at sea in conditions that defeated destroyers.

Many Atlantic and Arctic convoys relyed on these vessels to stem the tide when there was a shortage of destroyers and other naval escorts. The Kriegsmarine also used them as escorts for coastal convoys and escorts for submarines into and out of their bases.

The HMT Excellent was a Mersey class trawler built for the RN during WWI, one of over 500 trawlers in three classes built. Released to private owners between the wars, she was pressed back into service in WW2. Surviving the war, she was sold to Mercantile Malvern in 1949 and scrapped in 1954.
