Repaints of the Gryphon P-38L

Several artists have done excellent repaints of our P-38. Here are a few. If you know of some we've missed, please let us know! ~Gryphon.

Lockheed P-38 "California Cutie" (798 KB). California Cutie was the "mount" of 1st Lieutenant Richard Loehert of the 8th Air Force, 20th Fighter Group, 55th Fighter Squadron and carries full D-Day Invasion Markings. This plane and pilot was credited with 6 locomotives, 56 top hat and cane (escort) missions, 16 umbrella (top cover) missions and 11 broom (fighter sweep) missions. Repaint by Ed Wilson of Eagle Nest.

Lockheed P-38 "Hey Stuff" (823 KB). Hey Stuff flew with the 367th FG, 9th Air Force in the ETO. Repaint by Ed Wilson of Eagle Nest.

British Lockheed Lightning III (1.56 MB). Although the British originally planned to buy the P-38, the "Lightning I" and Lightning II" versions they ordered did not have superchargers of counter rotating props. As such, it was considered too underpowered by the British RAF. This aircraft is in the British camouflage scheme that was originally planned for shipment. However, it was the British that gave the name "Lightning" to the P-38 (the USAAC wanted to name it the "Atlanta"). Repaint by J-P Demmerle.

French Lockheed P-38 Lightning (1.63 MB). The U.S. (because of its lend lease agreement with allied nations) sent a limited number of P38's for use by the French. Most of these aircraft were of F-5 variants for photo recon, yet there were a few that were of the standard J variant. This perticular aircraft is of GR 2/33 which flew over Europe during 1944. The French used many different variants over a long period and in all campaigns from North Africa to the main continent. Repaint by J-P Demmerle.

Soviet Lockheed P-38 Lightning (1.20 MB). It was rumored that the U.S. (under the lend-lease agreement with the allied powers) sent a limited amount of P-38's to Russia. Although there is little documentation, this aircraft would have represented an standard livery of the Lightning in Soviet colors. This is a fictitous P-38J-25-LO named "Huntchedbacked Pawn" that would have flown on the eastern front sometime during the later part of the war. Repaint by J-P Demmerle.

Lockheed P-38J-25-LO "Billy's Filly" (1.54 MB). P-38J-25-LO flown by Lt. William Fowkes of the 12th FS - 18th FG, Zamboanga Philippines, January 1944. Repaint by J-P Demmerle.

Lockheed P-38J-25-LO "Beautiful Lass" (1.25 MB). Flown in the ETO in 1944. Repaint by J-P Demmerle.

Lockheed P-38J-25-LO "Pacific Prowler" (1.53 MB). P-38J-25-LO flown by Lt. Clint Ward of the 44th FS - 18th FG, Zamboanga Philippines, January 1944. Repaint by J-P Demmerle.

Lockheed P-38J-25-LO "Si Si Senor" (1.56 MB) of the 67th FS - 347th FG, Mindoro Philippines, October 1943. Repaint by J-P Demmerle.

Lockheed P-38 "Flying Tiger" (1.24 MB). Towards the end of the war and shortly thereafter, The US sold P-38J models to the Chinese government. Although there is little documentation regarding this, aircraft would have represented a standard livery of the Lightning in Chinese colors. The addition of the shark mouth and the writing is a guestimation as it is unsure as to whether the Chinese Airforce allowed individual markings or not. This is a fictitous P-38J-25-LO named "Flying Tiger" in memory of the AVG that did so much to help thwart the Japanese advancements. Repaint by J-P Demmerle.

Lockheed P-38 "Marge" (2.52 MB). Flown by Richard Ira Bong (with 40 confirmed kills the top scoring American Ace of all time) "Marge is one of the most famous aircraft of WW2. This aircraft was lost on March 24th 1944 by Lt. Tom Malone of the 421st Night Fighter Squadron who was on a weather flight over Wewak. After loss of an engine and entering a spin, Lt. Malone bailed out and made a heroic escape down a river through Japanese held territory. Upon his return to the squadron he found Bong "was not very happy" about the loss of his aircraft. A few days later soldiers of the 32d Infantry Division found the wreckage of "Marge" at the Bau Plantation where it can still be seen today*. Later, the USAAF repainted another Lightning in a similar scheme for Bong's stateside War Bond tour. Repaint by Dariusz.

* "The 421st Night Fighter Swquadron in WWII" by Jeff Kolln, Schiffer Military History, 2001.

Lockheed P-38 "Jeanne" (831 KB). Repaint representing a P-38J-15-LO of the 8th Air Force, 20th Fighter Group, 55th Fighter Squadron in the ETO, using Norman Walker's repainted skin as a base. Repaint by Hawkeye.
