Version ASPEN98B – May, 1999. Updates and replaces ASPEN98 - July, 1998

The Scenery
The scenery covers an area of approximately 400 square miles. The airports were designed from official plats, Denver ARTCC airport diagrams (available at www.airnav.com), the NOAA Denver sectional chart, conventional topographical maps, photographs and first-hand descriptions from individuals familiar with the airports and surrounding areas.
Features include seasonal changes, highlighted airport structures and mountains at night during winter (lighted buildings and simulating moonlight reflecting off snow) and a "reverse" ILS at Aspen-Pitkin for missed approaches, which is explained later in this document.
NOTE:
ASPEN98B requires Airport 2.05 (or later) OAV files and all Visual Object Designer (VOD) 2.7 PAT files.

Scenery Notes
For lack of better way to explain it, this scenery is about Mountain Flying - the look, the feel, the considerations. When designing Aspen98, I spoke to a real-life pilot who described flying the Aspen area in winter. He said, "Man, you don't know the relief when you get that airport in sight and make that turn on final." He mentioned the feeling of "being up there all alone" and the special weirdness of flying just before daybreak with relatively low visibility or coming in for a landing as night is falling. We can't simulate all aspects of winter, snow or sleet, with Flight Simulator (yet), but this scenery is an attempt at capturing the experience. It is highly recommended that users fly with visibility at 10nm or less, and an add-on such as FS Clouds helps lend realism. Also, the airports are located about a half hour or so from each other, which especially works out for those among us who grab our FS time on the run and want to get the whole take-off, flight, approach and landing enchilada in and still not miss dinner.
One other thought. The scenery ain't perfect. There may be discrepancies in regard to the structures at airports (feel free to send any scanned photos to help in the next update), and there might be some criticism on the lack of detail at the towns and outlying areas. In truth, I feel it is difficult, if not impossible, to get towns looking right. I tried a lot of tricks, but nothing seemed to work. I have flown over cities during winter and, let's face it, there isn't too much to see. So (we are flying, not driving, right?), I opted to try to make the textures look as they would from the air. At over 1,000 feet above the deck I believe the textures with this scenery work pretty well. And, I tired to select colors and textures that would work with the FS ground textures. There are other city-type textures available for download and feel free to use any other textures you prefer. Just be sure to name them Aspen_?. r8 and put them in the proper location. Please note that artistic license was exercised in designing the scenery and compromises were definitely made.
Last, but not least. Speaking of updates, there should be an update to this in a few months with meshed ground. Not doubt that FS2000 is going to open some doors, so, we'll see what happens, but there may be another around (gulp) the first if the year, 2000.
Oh. And thanks for downloading this. At the end of this, I say, " Please send any comments or suggestions." I really do appreciate feedback and, if you are enjoying the scenery I would love to get some e-mail. If you have some constructive comments, this is welcome too. If you plain hate the scenery, well, as our Moms taught us, "If you can't say anything nice…"

ASPEN98B - THE PACKAGE
ASPEN98B.ZIP contains the following files:

Scenery.Zip

ASE-AREA.- bgl Main Scenery File
- .EXC.BGL.bgl - Corresponding Exclude Files
COW-MTS.bgl - Western Colorado Mountain Revision
COW-MTS.bgl is a rework of the FS98 default tiles from the foothills west of Denver to the western Colorado border. This file provides realistic mountains (replacing the default FS98 "upside-down ice cream cone mountains) and seasonal changes. When used with the new texture file PRAIRW_M.R8 (see below), mountains are snow covered in winter.
DEFAULT AIRPORTS.Zip contains small bgl and exclude file for the FS default airport in Colorado. With changes to the default tiles above, some default airports do not display properly. These files should be used if you experience problems. The files and corresponding airports are:

Texture.Zip

 Winter Textures.Zip
Inside Texture.Zip, this zip file contains PRARIEW.R8 (ground) and PRAIRW_M.R8 (mountains), which are replacement textures for the default FS98 textures. They are to achieve winter effects, with snow on the ground and mountains. To use, make back-ups of the default files in \Flight Simulator\Texture and unzip these files into that directory. These are not to be placed in the \Aspen\Texture directory. Other, third party winter texture files are available at various flight simulator web sites. If you choose to use other winter textures with this scenery, they must be named PRARIEW.R8 and PRAIRW_M.R8.
 Situations.Zip
Situation files for each airport. Situations start using the Cessna 182, during daytime in winter. Weather is overcast with 10 miles visibility. Tower views are set correctly. Install in your \FLIGHT SIMULATOR\PILOTS directory.
 Reference.Zip

INSTALLATION
Create a subdirectory ASPEN in FLIGHT SIMULATOR\SCENERY, with additional subdirectories of SCENERY and TEXTURE in ASPEN.
Copy the Aspen scenery, exclude and COW-MTS BGLS to ASPEN\SCENERY and copy *.R8 files to ASPEN\TEXTURE. If necessary, unzip Default Airports.zip into ASPEN\SCENERY.
If replacement winter textures are to be used, again, make back-ups of the default files in \Flight Simulator\Texture and unzip the new PRARIEW.R8 and PRAIRW_M.R8 files into that directory.
Set up as LOCAL scenery in Scenery Manager above the FS CD-ROM US files. Check for other Colorado scenery that might be active.

NAVAIDS
The following Naviads are included in the scenery. Their locations relative to the airports is shown in NAVAIDS.JPG. They are:
Airport and Navaid details can be obtained at www.airnav.com.

I-PKN ILS FOR MISSED APPROACH
Aspen-Pitkin has unique ILS that is used for missed approaches on RWY 15. The ILS, 108.50, is located approximately 2 miles south-southeast of the airport, with a heading of 300 degrees (see Missed Approach I-PKN.JPG) As explained in the JPG, on a missed approach you will make a sharp right turn, pick up the ILS and head away from the airport at 300 degrees. About 11 miles out, make a right turn towards the Red Table (DBL) VOR of 113.00, keeping the airport in sight. After 2 or 3 miles, make a right turn another visual approach to RWY 15.

CONSIDERATIONS SUMMARY

1. Take offs at Aspen-Pitkin at on RWY 33 and landings are on RWY 15.
2. Landings at Eagle County Regional are on RWY 24, ILS 110.10.
3. Glenwood Springs Muni take offs are on RWY 14, landings on RWY 32.
4. All airports have fuel.
5. Realistic weather conditions and visibility (10 NM or less) are highly recommended.
6. Commercial aircraft that regularly fly these airports are:

Acknowledgments

The scenery was mainly created with Airport 2.10. 90% of the scenery was created with Airport. Many thanks to the Airport team, Pascal Meziat, Brian McWilliams, and Tom Hiscox (and others) for this truly remarkable free program. I urge all users of ASPEN98B to consider supporting this program in any way. The Airport web site is www.flightsimgroup.com.
Thanks are owed to Manfred Moldenhauer for SCASM 2.19 Rafael Sanchez for VOD 2.7, Abacus for their Airport and Scenery Designer and Tim Dickens and Rafael Sanchez for their Airport macros and textures, some of which I took the liberty of fiddling with a bit to work with the scenery.
Thanks to The Scenery Works for their permission to use their winter texture, Nedl_w_m.r8, which has been modified and renamed for the mountains in this scenery.
A special thank you to Joe King, who took a look at 14 or 15 beta versions of this scenery and watched it develop from the old Aspen98 into this version literally step by step. The time Joe spent on this, his attention to detail, help with the overall look and, especially, his support and enthusiasm was invaluable.  And, last but not least, thanks to Oscar Everett, who took time out to give this his seal of approval.
I do not believe this has happened, in addition to the above this scenery may contain a macro, texture or other element that is not my original design or proper credit has not been given. Please note that this is not intentional and it is certainly not my practice to "borrow" other people's work without acknowledgement.
